The 10th World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

A post commemorating WDAT and information about human trafficking

The 10th World Day Against Trafficking in Persons was commemorated last July 30, 2024. This day was pronounced by the United Nations (UN) to raise worldwide awareness on the situations of victims of human-trafficking, and to help promote and protect their rights.

The theme for this year’s UN-led global campaign is titled, “Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking.” The theme calls for the acceleration of actions towards ending child trafficking.

Based on the data collected by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), it is estimated that 50 million people were trafficked into modern slavery in 2021; an estimated 27.6 million people were subjected to forced labor, while 22 million people were trafficked into forced marriages.

In the Philippine setting, human traffickers target Filipino women and children in rural communities, conflict and disaster-affected areas, and poverty-stricken urban centers. Based on the 2023 Trafficking in Persons Report of the US Secretary of State, victims are subjected to sex trafficking, forced begging, and forced
labor within the country.

In light of all these, it is of utmost importance to actively campaign for awareness within our communities, to promote the protection of the rights of victim-survivors, and to support the nation and the world in accelerating actions to end human trafficking.

The world is enjoined to actively support the cause against the trafficking of women, men, and children.
